I-95 Project Update — Crossover Status & July/August Look-Ahead

CURRENT STATUS

The I-95 Northbound crossover has now been in place for just over three weeks, and we are pleased to report that the transition has gone smoothly. Local drivers have adjusted well to the new traffic configuration, and major GPS mapping services — including Waze, Apple Maps, and Google Maps — have been fully onboarded and are accurately reflecting the new traffic movements.

The new I-95 Northbound alignment and crossover continue to perform as designed, with very limited impact to traffic observed since implementation.

I-95 traffic volumes remain moderate, and data confirms that the current configuration is operating in optimal condition — effectively balancing impacts between the local roads in Groton and I-95 Southbound.

JULY PROJECT UPDATE

The project will remain in its current Maintenance and Protection of Traffic (MPT) configuration throughout the month of July.

Looking ahead to early August: The project will shift I-95 Northbound local traffic into its permanent Stage 1 alignment. While there will be no operational changes for drivers, the two travel lanes will be repositioned toward the center of the bridge, rather than pushed toward the right lanes as they are now.

During this shift, barrier will be installed along the I-95 Northbound local lanes, creating a confined travel corridor with limited shoulders. This will establish what the project team has been referring to as the "cattle chute" configuration. We anticipate this condition will be fully in place by the end of August.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Day and night operations will be variable throughout this period.

  • Traffic impacts beyond the typical nightly lane closures are not anticipated.

  • No other significant changes are expected within the next month.

We appreciate the continued patience and cooperation of our residents, commuters, and city staff as this critical project moves forward. Updates will continue to be shared as new milestones approach.
